Entries for December 2016

Written on December 22

Merriest of Greetings to You,

I just got off the phone with a customer, and we both took turns answering the question, "Are you ready for the holidays?" I am sorry to report that both of us said, "No. Still too much work to do."

It is a sad situation when we don't have time to enjoy the times leading up to the actual friends and family events unfolding this weekend and through the next week. Oh, well. Not much I can do about that now except to find moments of anticipation and readiness in between the ever-present work.

I always think of you, our friends and colleagues, during this time of the year. Many of your names and faces come into my mind and heart. I am so thankful for those of you who have added yourselves to the long list of ambassadors - bright lights- for our mission. Wendy, Ashley, Daniel, Shealy, Tammi and I take time to talk about you who have encouraged our spirits and helped others to see a bright future.

My simple suggestion is to take time to find quiet moments to enjoy and thank those whose spirits and hearts need warming. Tell them what they mean to you. This is especially important since many are people you see so infrequently.

May this holiday season bring you joy and meaning amidst all of the noise.

Warm regards,

Jim Kirkpatrick

Every year at the ATD conference, Charles Denault makes it a point to attend the Kirkpatrick session. He is always learning something new about evaluating and demonstrating the value of learning programs.

This past spring, he had the good fortune of sitting next to Michael Wiedecker, Director of Operations Training at the Maryland Transit Administration. They worked together on a couple of the in-session exercises, and Michael was very knowledgeable about implementing the Kirkpatrick Model. Of course, when Jim mentioned the work MTA had done, it all made sense to Charles.

A few weeks later, Charles learned that CLO Magazine needed a case study. It's so seldom that he hears of such significant business results that it was easy to pitch the MTA story. When he interviewed Michael and Elmer Coppage, Deputy Director of Training and Development, Charles learned how powerful the Kirkpatrick Model can be.

Training programs can be abstract, even amorphous, but once broken down into four levels, learning leaders gain the ability to analyze and improve each of these areas so the training has a real impact for the learners and the organization.
