Kirkpatrick Quick Tip Vol. 2 #30

Creating survey and test questions is a science, but you do not have to be a scientist to recognize and correct a common error in question structure.

Survey questions are frequently impossible to answer accurately because they actually ask more than one question. Here are some examples of poorly designed questions:

Rating-scale Questions:
  • The instructor was engaging and informative.

  • This class met my needs and applies to my job.

  • This program was enjoyable and informative.
Open-ended Questions:
  • Please tell us what you liked and disliked most about the program.

  • Which modules were the most and least relevant to you?
Each of these questions should be divided into two separate questions so that it is clear what the training participant is trying to tell you. This will give you more usable data to make good decisions related to your program and its impact. Take a few moments to review your program evaluation forms to see if you have any questions that need to be modified.
