How do you connect training and evaluation to improved on-the-job performance and results?

Jim was working with a client a few years back that had won a number of industry awards for their training programs. One of their showcase programs was their new hire onboarding program. They were especially pleased with their Level 1 survey results. "We consistently average 4.8 on a 5-point scale! To be honest, we don't think we need to consider any changes to that program," they said.

Jim suggested that they add one question to their evaluation form: "I know what is expected of me as a result of attending this training."

They added the question, and to their dismay, most participants responded that they disagreed or strongly disagreed. After participating in a week of comprehensive training, few graduates had any idea what they were supposed to do with what they had learned when they started work the following Monday.

I was sitting in front of an audience of 2,000 people in Calcutta, India in November of 2002 at the India Society for Training and Development (ISTD) annual conference. I was on stage as one of the three keynote speakers talking back-to-back-to-back on the future of learning in India.

The first speaker was the head of the India Ministry of Education. The second was the head of the India Ministry for Learning and Development. The third, me, was a nervous fledgling in the field of L&D, the son of the famous Dr. Don Kirkpatrick

The first two speakers read directly from their notes, heads in the podium, in monotone voices. Their messages were ironically something about how we need to make learning more interactive, more personal and more dynamic.

Even though I was an unseasoned speaker, I could feel the audience slipping away. As the second orator finished, I had two thoughts. One was, "I am set up to fail; the audience is gone." The second was, "Well, I am not going down without a fight."

Thus, my defining moment was at hand.

Greetings Colleagues and Friends,

Wendy and I were watching a sappy Hallmark Channel T.V. movie the other night about an orange cat bringing together two unlikely people to form a beautiful new relationship.

If was fun to watch, but a line in the movie really struck me. As the attractive female veterinarian was having lunch with the handsome young firefighter, she asked him, "What have been the defining moments in your life?" Wow. Talk about the fast track to get to know someone.

After clearing away the blank look on his face, he told a brief story of a firefighter crashing through the window of his bedroom when he was seven years old to save his life.

After the movie was over, I thought about how I would answer that question. What are my defining moments?
