The ATD 2017 International Conference & Exposition is happening this week in Kirkbook's hometown of Atlanta, Ga.

Kirkbook has had such a great time getting ready for the conference, watching Jim's session and interacting with all of the people there.

To say that my Dad, Don Kirkpatrick, was an optimist is a colossal understatement. His team was always going to come around in the end to win. It would always stop raining so he could go fishing. He could always count on people to do their best. And when it didn't happen, he would shrug it off and begin his positive expectations all over again for the next event.

I don't recommend that you wear the proverbial rose-colored glasses 24/7. Sometimes your team will lose, it will continue to rain, and people will disappoint you. However, it is not fun to always expect the worst, or be around people who carry a black cloud.

At Kirkpatrick Partners, we decided several years ago to be more like Don. We typically avoid defending our model to active resisters. Instead, we like to focus our time and energy with people who are interested in making our model work. We find that when we encourage them, they share their successes with others. And those who are disinterested or skeptical tend to believe them, and are more likely to try our New World Kirkpatrick Model

We also recommend that you find receptive business partners on the other side who will give you a chance, or just open the door a crack. Work through a program with them, and create a success story that you can publicize. Then, your team of like-minded professionals will grow, as will business partnerships.

There is an abundance of positive people and life experiences for me to surround myself with. I have no interest in battling with black clouds. I suggest you do the same.

May is Military Appreciation Month. We do a lot of work with the military, and some of our Certified Facilitators are military veterans.

Chuck Udell, a Kirkpatrick Certified Facilitator, describes below how the Kirkpatrick Model has influenced his career.

I am a veteran, having served many years ago as an Air Force weapons officer from 1971 to 1975. I was stationed in England and Thailand.

The Kirkpatrick Model has influenced my career tremendously. I first earned my bronze certification, which was quickly followed by silver and gold certification. I am now a Certified Facilitator.

Using the New World Kirkpatrick Model has enabled me to provide sustainable training to my clients. I insist that an evaluation plan first must be approved by management, which ensures agreement on the desired result, leading indicators, critical behaviors and required driver package. Then, my post-training session clients are coached on how to implement their driver package.

The Kirkpatrick Model has also enabled me to understand why an engagement I had before I learned the Kirkpatrick process was not successful.

I have used the model while co-facilitating programs with our government and military. It has been an honor to work with the Kirkpatrick Model, so I can better train our armed forces.

These days, I am often faced with issues related to the four levels and life in general that require guidance. While it has been three years since I last saw my dad, it has only been three days since I last talked to him.

I am thankful that I have wise and caring colleagues and friends who help me find answers, or at least partial answers. Frequently, I turn to the writings, shadows and memories of my dad for further advice. As I reflect back on his life and passing, he is still teaching and helping me. I thought it would be fitting for me to share a couple of those lessons with you.

Don Kirkpatrick made his final formal presentation to over 800 training professionals at the ATD International Conference and Exposition in 2011. The enthusiastic crowd shared laughs and shed a few tears as Don led the group in singing his famous Trainer's Song.
